Marla C. Dubinsky, MD, is a Professor of Pediatrics and Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, NY. Dr. Dubinsky received her medical degree from Queen’s University, Canada. She completed her pediatric residency at Alberta Children’s Hospital, Calgary, Canada, and her clinical fellowship in gastroenterology and nutrition at Sainte-Justine Hospital at the University of Montreal, Canada. She completed her research fellowship in IBD at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA, where she served as the Director of the Pediatric IBD Center before going to Mount Sinai as the Chief of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition at the Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital and Co-Director of the Susan and Leonard Feinstein IBD Clinical Center. Dr. Dubinsky is also the Co-Director of the IBD Preconception and Pregnancy Planning Clinic at Mount Sinai. She is the Co-Founder of Mi-Test Health, and Cornerstones Health which is a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing and transforming communication between health care providers, patients, and industry partners through creative, comprehensive, and expert-based educational program. She is also the Co-Founder of Trellus Health, a condition management digital health company-leading with GI conditions. She is also a recipient of the 2022 Sherman Prize which is awarded to IBD researchers with extraordinary track records of achievement, making exceptional and pioneering contributions that transform IBD care and a recent recipient of the Jacobi Medallion at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Dr. Dubinsky has been engaged in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) clinical and translational research for over two decades. She has a keen interest in personalized medicine in IBD and her research uncovers predictors of rapid disease progression with the goal of preventing complications by altering treatment plans. Dr. Dubinsky is the principal investigator of multiple large longitudinal cohorts including the Road to Prevention Multiplex Family Program at Mount Sinai with over 700 enrolled participants with a goal of using multi-omic data to predict the development of IBD in unaffected family members and co-investigator of the Risk Stratification and Identification of Immunogenetic and Microbial Markers of Rapid Disease Progression in Children with Crohn’s Disease (RISK) study and senior author on the manuscript presenting a model to predict the natural history of pediatric Crohn’s disease. Dr. Dubinsky is very committed to women’s reproductive health in IBD and in addition to her research in this field she is the Co-founder of WECARE in IBD, an organization dedicated to the health of women with IBD. She is very committed to leading the next generation of female leaders in the field of GI. She has lectured widely, both nationally and internationally, and has published in more than 400 peer-reviewed journals, including New England Journal of Medicine, Gastroenterology, Lancet, JAMA, The Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, The Journal of Crohn’s and Colitis, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, and the American Journal of Gastroenterology.

Paulo Gustavo Kotze MD, MsC, PhD

Paulo Gustavo Kotze is Adjunct Senior Professor of Surgery and founder of the Colorectal Surgery Unit at Cajuru University Hospital of the Catholic University in Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil (2002). He received his medical degree at the Federal University of Paraná in 1997 and completed his General Surgery training at the Evangelical University Hospital in Curitiba (2000). He also completed his senior Fellowship in Colorectal Surgery at the Clinics Hospital from the Federal University of Parana (2002). Dr. Kotze achieved his Masters’ Degree on Surgery at the Catholic University in 2008 and joined the faculty of medicine at the same university in 2011, as assistant professor of surgery. He achieved his PhD degree studying the influence of biological therapy on surgical outcomes in Crohn´s disease, in the University of Campinas, in São Paulo, Brazil (UNICAMP) in 2015. Dr. Kotze was also an IBD advanced visiting fellow in the IBD unit at the University of Calgary (Cumming school of medicine), Canada, for the period of 2017-2018. Currently, he is full Professor of the Postgraduate Health Sciences Program at the Catholic University of Paraná, with focus in colorectal surgery. 

Dr. Kotze is an experienced academic IBD surgeon and author of 3 books, more than 210 pubmed peer-reviewed articles and multiple book chapters focused on Crohn´s disease and ulcerative colitis, with an h-index of 39 (google scholar) and 34 (Scopus). He has a special interest in the fields of miminally invasive colorectal surgery (including robotics), biological therapy and epidemiology in IBD. He actively participates on the directory board of the Brazilian Study group for IBD (GEDIIB), is currently co-editor of the Journal of Coloproctology (periodical of the Brazilian society of colorectal surgeons) and participates as an international editorial board member of the Lancet Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Journal of Crohn’s and Colitis, Colorectal Disease, Intestinal Research, Therapeutic Advances in Gastroenterology and the British Journal of Surgery. He is an associated editor of Techniques in Coloproctology and Crohn’s and Colitis 360. He is also a reviewer for several international journals such as Gut, Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Diseases of the Colon and Rectum, Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Gastroenterology, among others. Dr. Kotze was formerly a committee member of S-ECCO (surgeons of ECCO) from 2015-2018 and a member of the ECCO EduCOM (educational committee), from 2018-2022. In 2020, he was selected as a full active member of IOIBD (International Organization for the Study of Inflammatory Bowel Disease). He is also a senior researcher of the Brazilian National Research Council (CNPq) since 2024.

Gil Y. Melmed, MD, MS, earned his medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine (AOA), and master of science in clinical research from UCLA School of Medicine, Los Angeles. He completed his gastroenterology fellowship at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Dr Melmed has clinical research interests in inflammatory bowel diseases, including clinical trials, health services research, preventive care, quality improvement, translational genotype/phenotype studies, and surgical outcomes. He has authored or coauthored more than 250 articles in peer-reviewed journals and several book chapters. Dr Melmed has served as Associate Editor of the American Journal of Gastroenterology, and clinical research editor for Inflammatory Bowel Disease. He is the co-director of IBD QORUS, a multicenter IBD quality improvement collaborative network. His research is funded by several agencies including the NIH, the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, the Helmsley Charitable Trust. He has led or participated in the development of quality indicators for IBD with the American Gastroenterology Association, the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, the National Quality Forum, and the Canadian Crohn’s and Colitis organizations.

Dr. Jeannie Huang

Dr. Jeannie Huang is Professor of Pediatrics at UC San Diego School of Medicine and Medical Director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center at Rady Children’s Hospital–San Diego.

She is also a Physician Informaticist, Director of Continuing Medical Education at Rady Children’s, and Assistant Dean of Continuing Medical Education at UC San Diego.

Dr. Huang’s research focuses on how the health of individuals, communities and populations can be improved through the creative use of wireless and networked technologies, and ubiquitous computing.
Her research focuses in particular on youth suffering from chronic diseases.

Tina Aswani-Omprakash, MPH

Award-Winning Women’s Health Advocate, Founder of Own Your Crohn’s, and Co-Founder of the South Asian IBD Alliance (SAIA)

Tina Aswani-Omprakash, MPH is a multi award-winning women’s health advocate based out of New York City. Tina pivoted from Wall Street to a path of impactful change in healthcare after her own Crohn’s disease diagnosis and life-saving ostomy surgery. Due to the stigmas and disparities she faced in her own journey, she started a blog and social media advocacy platform called
Own Your Crohn’s, which brought to light cultural determinants related to GI care and access and went viral across patient communities. Her pathbreaking advocacy brought together multiple patient advocates and clinicians, eventually leading to the formation of South Asian IBD Alliance (SAIA), a patient-clinician led non-profit organization working to improve education and awareness in the growing South Asian IBD community.

Tina has been named a Top 5 Patient Influencer in the IBD Community by Time Magazine. She has been featured in The New York Times, on the cover of American College of Gastroenterology Magazine, and in Gastroenterology & Endoscopy News as well as Health Magazine for her trailblazing advocacy work. Tina has also spoken at multiple leading medical, clinical research, and patient conferences worldwide. She has co-authored and led research studies in many prominent medical journals (JAMA, The Lancet, Gastroenterology, Clinical Gastroenterology & Hepatology, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, etc.). The American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) awarded Tina the Best Patient Advocacy Award and the Best International Healthcare Education & Advocacy Award in 2022 and 2024, respectively. Tina and South Asian IBD Alliance’s patient advocacy arm, IBDesis, were both awarded the Healio Gastroenterology Disruptive Innovator Award in 2019 and 2023, respectively, for moving the needle on GI care for patients. Very Well Health presented Tina with the Health Impact Award and Social Health Network awarded her the Revolutionary Researcher Award in the patient advocacy space in 2023. The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation recognized Tina in 2021 for her phenomenal leadership and powerful impact on the IBD community with the Above & Beyond Volunteer Award.

Arnab Chatterjee, PhD

Senior Medicinal Chemist and Head of Chemistry & Informatics at Calibr-Skaggs, a Division of Scripps Research

After receiving his PhD in Organic Chemistry at Caltech in 2002, Arnab joined the Genomics Institute of the Novartis Research Foundation (GNF) as a Principal Investigator in the chemistry department. The project teams he has worked with have produced eight preclinical candidates optimized for both inhaled and oral formulations, with three novel first-in-class compounds in clinical trials, including Ganaplacide in Phase 3 for malaria. Since May 2012, he has been responsible for leading the chemistry group at Calibr-Skaggs in La Jolla, CA, working across a wide variety of disease areas, including eight active lead optimization programs. In total, Dr. Chatterjee has over 22 years of experience as a medicinal chemist and has developed 16 drug candidates in clinical trials and late-stage preclinical development at GNF and Calibr. In addition, he leads the informatics group at Calibr, including the establishment of the best-in-class drug repurposing collection, Reframedb.org.

Gauree Gupta Konijeti, MD, MPH

Gauree Gupta Konijeti, MD, MPH, is a gastroenterologist specializing in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, at Scripps Clinic in San Diego. She trained in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, completed internal medicine residency at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and UCLA West LA VA Hospital, and attended medical school at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Konijeti holds a Master of Public Health from UCLA. She joined Scripps Clinic in 2014 after completion of her GI fellowship, serves at the Director of the IBD Program, and is a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine. In addition to her clinical practice, Dr. Konijeti serves on national, regional and local committees related to education and research in IBD and GI. She serves a core GI faculty member for the Scripps GI fellowship and has developed the IBD curriculum and training. Dr. Konijeti also conducts research in IBD and diet/nutrition, clinical outcomes, and decision analysis, and has received funding from Scripps Clinic, National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Department of Defense (DoD).

Mazer Ally, MD, FACG

Dr. Mazer Ally is an adult Gastroenterologist and Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Scripps Clinic, with a specialized focus on Inflammatory Bowel Disease. He completed both his undergraduate and medical education at The George Washington University. After commissioning into the U.S. Army, he completed his Internal Medicine Residency and Gastroenterology fellowship at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Before joining Scripps Clinic, Dr. Ally served as the Co-Director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Program at Walter Reed and as the Chief of Gastroenterology at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, HI. He also served in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as a Squadron Surgeon for the 10th Mountain Division, earning the Meritorious Service Medal. Additionally, he served as a Battalion Surgeon for the 25th Infantry Division.

Dr. Ally has authored numerous publications and presented his research at national medical conferences, focusing on inflammatory bowel disease and eosinophilic esophagitis. He is an active member of national committees for the American College of Gastroenterology and the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation. He is also a Fellow both of the American College of Gastroenterology and of the American Gastroenterology Association.

Outside of his professional life, Dr. Ally enjoys spending time with his family, as well as traveling, surfing, hiking, and running.

Edward L. Barnes, MD, MPH

Edward L. Barnes, MD, MPH is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology and Co-Director of the Multidisciplinary Inflammatory Bowel Diseases Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Barnes has a research interest in the epidemiology and clinical outcomes of patients with inflammatory bowel disease, with a particular interest in improving our understanding of inflammatory conditions of the pouch after restorative proctocolectomy with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA). He has received funding to study clinical outcomes of patients with pouchitis and other inflammatory conditions of the pouch and to investigate risk factors for a complicated disease course after IPAA.

Brigid S. Boland, MD

Brigid S. Boland, MD, is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of California, San Diego. She is the Director of IBD at UCSD and the Director of Translational Inflammatory Bowel Disease Research at UCSD. She is the Director of the UCSD IBD Biorepository and is the co-Director of the P30-funded Translational Core for the San Diego Digestive Diseases Research Center.

She is actively involved in translational research aiming to better underlying the pathophysiology of inflammatory bowel diseases and develop biomarkers to predict response to therapy. She is the Principal Investigator on multiple industry-sponsored clinical trials. She has been funded by a CCF Career Development Award and NIH K23. She is the principal investigator on multiple industry grants. She is funded by a CCF award and Helmsley Charitable Trust grant.

Dr. Orme

Assistant Professor of Dermatology at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), specializing in complex medical dermatology

Born and raised in southern California, Dr. Orme ventured off to get an MD and PhD at Yale university with a focus on the molecular mechanisms of cellular trafficking followed by an internal medicine intern year at Yale New Haven Hospital. She then went on to complete her dermatology residency at New York University. She was recruited to UCSD Dermatology in 2016. Dr. Orme’s practice focuses on complex medical dermatology including cutaneous side effects of biological therapy, oncological therapy and cutaneous lymphomas.

Prof. Dr. W.A. Bemelman

Professor of Surgery at Amsterdam University Medical Centers and EBSQ-Certified Colorectal Surgeon, specializing in minimally invasive treatment of IBD, colorectal cancer, and complication surgery

Willem A. Bemelman graduated as a surgeon in 1994 trained at the department of Surgery of the Academic Medical Hospital, University of Amsterdam and St. Lucas Hospital in Amsterdam. After his training as a surgeon, he worked at the department of Surgery at Leiden University Medical Center being responsible for the benign gastrointestinal disease. In 1999 he returned to the Academic Medical Center to develop the Minimal Invasive Surgery further. In 2006 he was appointed as a Professor in Surgery. Parallel to his appointment at the Amsterdam University Medical Centers, he worked parttime at the San Raffaele Ospedale in Milan form 2021-2022.
His field of interest in patient care and research is the (minimal invasive) treatment of IBD, colorectal cancer and complication surgery.
Bemelman is a EBSQ certified colorectal surgeon (Bologna 2005), the former president of the ESCP (2019-2020) and former secretary of ECCO (2018-2020). He has more than 690 pubmed papers, coached more than 50 PhD students and has a H-index of 80. He holds honorary memberships of 10 international societies, and is a member of the IOIBD and Europeans Surgical Association.

Currently he is working in the department of surgery of the Amsterdam University Medical Centers and parttime at Bento Surgical Clinics.

Maria T. Abreu, MD

Dr. Maria T. Abreu is a physician-scientist and gastroenterologist who specializes in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). She completed her medical degree at the University of Miami School of Medicine. Her postdoctoral training included an internship and residency in medicine at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, and a clinical and research fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of California, Los Angeles. Previously, she has been an Associate Professor of Medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York (and head of their IBD Center) as well as a Professor of Medicine and a Professor of Microbiology & Immunology at the University of Miami School of Medicine, Miami, FL (and the Director of the Crohn’s and Colitis Center). She was recently appointed the Executive Director of the F. Widjaja IBD Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Dr. Abreu has 30 years of leadership experience in basic, translational, and clinical research and mentoring. She was elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation in 2010; in 2018, she was elected to the Association of American Physicians. She completed a three-year term as Chair of the International Organization for the Study of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IOIBD) in 2022. Currently, she is the President of the AGA. She is the fifth woman and first Latina to hold this position.

Her work has received multiple awards and acknowledgements. She is a recipient of the 2019 Sherman Prize from the Bruce and Cynthia Sherman Charitable Foundation, which recognizes outstanding achievements in IBD. In 2020, she was bestowed with Healio’s Lifetime Disruptor Award for addressing critical unmet needs in IBD. This award goes to a gastroenterologist or hepatologist who consistently pushes the gastroenterology field forward through innovative treatments, practice management, patient care, or research.

Dr. Abreu is frequently invited as a speaker (in English and Spanish) at symposia on basic science and clinical topics all over the world. She has authored almost 300 peer-reviewed articles, books, chapters, and reviews.

Alan Moss, MD, FACG, AGAF, FEBG, FRCPI

Alan Moss, MD, FACG, AGAF, FEBG, FRCPI is a clinician-scientist with an interest in Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis (Inflammatory Bowel Disease, IBD). His clinical expertise is in management of IBD, and he is Director of the Crohn’s & Colitis Program at Boston Medical Center. His research interests include microbial therapeutics, mucosal immunology and clinical outcomes. He has held grant funding from NIDDK, AGA, Helmsley Charitable Trust, and the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation. He has published over 120 research papers (h-index 28), including many cited in national and international practice guidelines. Dr Moss has held positions as Deputy-Editor of Crohn’s & Colitis 360, and as Associate Editor for Journal of Crohn’s & Colitis (ECCO), Frontline Gastroenterology (BMJ) and the World Journal of Gastroenterology. He has served on the Nominating Committee of the IBD section of AGA, and the Professional Education and National Scientific Advisory Committee for the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation. He is a reviewer for national and international research bodies, including the NIDDK and European Research Council.

Melissa J Ferrari

Melissa J Ferrari is a Physician Assistant for the IBD team within Scripps Gastroenterology. She is experienced in the complicated nuances of Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s disease patients and has dedicated her career to their care. She works directly with IBD physician experts in order to provide a personalized approach for every patient. Melissa is also an avid patient advocate and active member of the Crohns and Colitis Foundation San Diego chapter.

Lori Beeken MS, RDN

Registered Dietitian, Gastroenterology Specialist at Scripps Clinic Torrey Pines, with expertise in nutrition therapy for autoimmune and gastrointestinal disorders

Lori is a Registered Dietitian who has worked in the acute care setting at Scripps Green hospital for the over 15 years and has transitioned to working in the outpatient Gastroenterology clinic at Scripps Clinic Torrey Pines for the past 6 years. Lori specializes in working with patients with a variety of autoimmune diseases with a primary focus on inflammatory bowel disease. She received her undergraduate education at St. Mary’s College of California, her Master’s in Nutritional Sciences from San Diego State University, and completed her dietetic internship through Loyola University of Chicago. She is a member of the Dietitians in Gluten and Gastrointestinal Disorders practice group through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and she serves on the medical advisory board for Nutritional Therapy for IBD, a non-profit organization that provides education and resources on evidenced based nutrition therapy for IBD to patients and providers. She has been fortunate enough to do research with and work alongside many caring and devoted Scripps Gastroenterologists, with the hopes of shedding light on the profound connection between medical management and nutrition therapy for gastrointestinal diseases.
